John Baumgartner (1865-1846)

Born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin on January 24, 1865, Baumgartner was a self-taught painter. He settled in San Francisco in 1894 and for over 50 years was an active member of the local art scene. Painting in oil, tempera, and watercolor, his subjects were primarily landscapes and pastoral scenes with figures. He died in San Francisco on October 18th, 1946. Baumgartner’s work is held in the Oakland Museum, the California State Library in Sacramento, and the California Historical Society. He was a member of the Bohemian Club and the San Francisco Art Association. Hi work was exhibited on the Milwaukee Expo in 1892, the San Francisco Art Association in 1900, the Society for Sanity in Art, and the California Palace of the Legion of Honor.
