(1864-1946) Landscape and marine painter. Born in Detroit, MI on October 15, 1864. Judson was raised and educated in Kansas City. In 1888 he went to Europe for two years of art study in Munich and Paris, and upon returning to the U.S., settled in San Francisco. At the turn of the century he married the daughter of Carmel artist Sydney Yard. He continued his training at the Mark Hopkins Institute where he became an assistant professor in 1904. Judson was instrumental in forming the art department at UC Berkeley and acted as head of that school from 1902-23. In 1921 he painted the backgrounds and friezes at the Natural History Museum in the Golden Gate Park. After a fire destroyed their San Francisco home, the Judsons moved to the Monterey Peninsula in 1926. He contributed greatly both as an educator and an artist before his death at his Carmel home on November 4, 1946.
